I grew up in the small mountain town of Frisco, CO where I realized my interest in photography at a young age. I received my first SLR (a Pentax ME Super) when I was 14 and as I grew so did my passion for photography. Living in Frisco allowed me the freedom to take pictures of the beautiful mountains, lakes, sunsets and wild animals while refining my skills.
I have always viewed Ansel Adams and John Fielder as pioneers of nature photography. I apply many of their trade practices to my work no matter what the subject. I feel the pictures I take are unique in vision and style. I like to think ‘outside of the box’ with out being too dramatic. I feel some photographers apply too much stylization using techniques like shooting at odd angles, using wacky color filters or using Photoshop effects in order to individualize their photos. While this is always an option for my personal images, I tend not to use these effects unless requested by the client.
Here’s a short in-sight how my career as a photographer progressed through the ages.
As I advanced in school, I signed up to be a photographer on the school newspaper, yearbook staff and I took Senior yearbook photos for a couple of friends. These were my first experiences having my photos published.
After High School graduation I took classes at Red Rocks Community College where I studied Photoshop and web design. I graduated with a degree in Multimedia Graphics & Animation.
Through the years of related and unrelated jobs I have always made time and stay faithful to my favorite pastime. I continued to learn and grow as a photographer often practicing on my favorite and closest subjects – my daughter, my wife, our 4 ferrets, our 2 cats, and our 2 dogs. I’m often the designated photographer at any family event. It’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it…
Not too long ago, at the nagging of my wife, I decided to make my hobby an official company. In 2004 Serifin LLC was launched with Serifin Photography becoming a subsidiary. I felt starting this company validated me as a Freelance Photographer.
